A print and/or digital competition, qualifying for the Annual Competition Shield

Competition Brief:

Let your imagination shape the world around you. We want to see what a creative landscape means to you. Think beyond the traditional postcard-perfect view and embrace a creative approach to creating or capturing land or seascapes.

You can use unusual perspectives, bold compositions, abstract interpretations, digital manipulation, macro photography – where can you see a landscape?

This is an Open competition with each club submitting 4 prints and 4 PDI

An Evening of Classic Photography – You have an opportunity to step away from the digital world and take part in this film photography exercise launched at the AGM.

Whether you’re dusting off an old SLR or box camera from the attic, this is your chance to experience (or re‑experience) the magic of shooting with film with no instant previews and sharing that experience with other members.

Each participant will have the chance to show some of their developed images — either as projected on screen or as physical prints. We’ll talk about the creative choices, technical challenges, and surprises of working with film and what we have learned from the process.

This is an Open competition with each club submitting 6 PDI plus a reserve to be used as a tie breaker

Minimalist/Simple Photography

Whether you enjoy nature, still life, abstract, architecture or landscape photography, minimalism can play a big part in an image.

Negative space, composition, post processing to remove distractions, a bold colour, the pastel ‘washed out’ look, monochrome, backgrounds, framing,  repeating patterns can all bring the feeling of minimalism to an image.

This members evening is about sharing examples of your images to demonstrate how different techniques can work, or how to get from one image, to a more simplistic/ minimal image by cropping, or removing.

In the past 18 months we had examples from Wayne Fisher with architecture photography, and Simon Ellingworth with street photography. Peter Forsgard’s ideas on You Tube on minimalism, and how / where he sees the image are interesting. (https://youtu.be/x9DaDNMI1BQ?si=Q1s3GObK9H9eYBH3 )

Competition Brief:

Monochrome | any subject.

It includes all forms of black and white photography, which produce images containing tones of neutral grey ranging from black to white. Other hues besides grey, such as sepia, cyan or brown can also be used as an alternative to grey (black/white) in monochrome photography.

This club meeting is a great opportunity for brand enthusiasts to come together, share their experiences, and learn from fellow photographers. Members can talk about the camera brands and lenses they use, sharing what they like, what they’ve learned, and how their equipment performs in real-world situations.

It’s a chance to compare different systems, discuss favourite features, swap tips and techniques, and perhaps discover something new. Whether you’re a long-time photographer or just starting out, everyone has something to contribute. Most importantly, the meeting is about sharing a passion for photography, learning from one another, and enjoying the experience of capturing great images.

The Annual General Meeting with reports from the Committee and an open discussion on matters within the club, including the election of the Officers.

Competition Brief:

Open | Colour or monochrome

Members are invited to provide digital or print format images that are taken from a perspective of looking up or looking down.

With the help of light, colour, texture or subject matter, create an image from a different perspective than we are used to.

The subject can be nature, landscape, portraiture or abstract. See where your creativity takes you!

This is an “Open” competition for a maximum of 30 clubs with each club submitting 6 prints.
The judge is Sue Wilson DPAGB BPE3*
A free exhibition of the prints is open for viewing at the Free Church earlier iny the day of the exhibition.

The Task –

• To be the last print standing as voted for by your peers on the night!
• You may submit up to 4 Prints
• Any standard mounted print is eligible i.e. it can have been used in any Shield or Member judged competition or any Exhibition. Previous scores and awards are irrelevant – it’s how your peers judge your print against others on the night
• The competition will start with the Group Stage (each Group to be allocated to a half)

  • Prints will be randomly selected and placed into groups of 4
  • Each print will “play” the other prints in the group and for each match members will vote by a show of hands which print is the best (by any criteria they wish)
  • 5 points for each winning print and 2 points for the loser
  • The top two prints in each group go through
  • Arrangements in the event of a tie to be disclosed on the night

• The Knock Out Stage

  • The winner of one group will play the second place of another Group in the opposite side of the draw) The runner of the same group will play the first place of another Group in the opposite side of the draw)
  • Members will vote by a show of hands and the losing print will be eliminated.
  • The Knock Out continues until we reach the grand final

• Up to 4 print images can be entered
• Please ensure you have them in your preferred order
• Entries my need to be culled if there are too many

This is an “Open” completion for PDI with each club submitting 6 images with 1 nominated as the tie breaker image.

Time to be advised

This is an “Open” competition for all member clubs of the East Anglian Federation with separate competitions for Print and PDI. Each club is invited to enter 15 images in each category and we can expect to see the very best work from the East Anglian region.

We are awaiting confirmation of start times.

The 3 way challenge with Bedford and Biggleswade Camera Clubs is this year being hosted by ADCC. This is an “Open” competition with each club entering 10 prints and 10 PDI.

A print and/or digital competition, qualifying for the Annual Competition Shield

Competition Brief:

Open | Colour or monochrome

Any animal or group of animals. Subjects may be photographed in the wild or in controlled conditions such as zoos, wildlife parks, farms, aquariums, aviaries, butterfly houses or botanical gardens. Scientific bands, tags or radio collars on wild animals are permitted.

Images may be processed using conventional photographic adjustments (e.g. exposure, white balance, contrast, colour, sharpening, noise reduction, cropping, dust spotting and similar techniques) provided the final image remains a truthful representation of the original scene.

Composite images, focus stacking and panoramic stitching are permitted only where they do not alter the factual content of the scene.

We are asking you to create a single colour panel with 9 images.

Using 3 images wide, by 3 tall (square or portrait) choose a colour and create a colour panel. This can be created in photoshop or a PowerPoint slide saved to jpg.

We shall discuss as a group how it was created, why and what works

Think about different shades, compositions, framing and light. You may choose to take them all in one sitting on an outing, to a market or holiday, or spread over several days. Some ideas

• Red: Poppies, phone boxes, post boxes, tomatoes, peppers.

• Yellow: Melons, bananas, daffodils, buttercups.

• Green: Fruit & vegetables, grass, trees.

• Other items (cars, doors, cladding on buildings, bottles etc.)

There’s literally nothing that can’t be included.

Whether the photo is unusual, or quite ordinary, the key is that they must work together as a panel.

A Monochrome Photography Discussion Evening

An informal evening devoted to monochrome photography. Experienced members will demonstrate their approach to capturing and processing black and white images, while everyone is encouraged to share tips, techniques and examples.

Topics for discussion – seeing in black and white, tonal control, contrast, composition, lighting and post-processing.

A chance to exchange ideas, ask questions and learn from each other’s experience.

The emphasis is on discussion, inspiration and learning together.

A digital competition, qualifying for the Annual Competition Shield

Judge: Members

Competition Brief:

Colour or monochrome

The image should portray or strongly suggest movement or motion. The movement may be that of people, animals, birds, vehicles, water, weather, machinery or any other subject where motion is a key element of the photograph.

Movement may be shown by:

• Motion blur

• Panning

• Long exposure

• Frozen action

• Multiple exposure (created in-camera)

• The interaction of moving subjects with a static environment

• Any creative photographic technique that clearly conveys motion

The emphasis is on producing an image where movement is an essential part of the visual impact, rather than simply recording a moving subject.

Details to follow

Produce up to 3 images that demonstrate creative control of depth of field, using selective focus to isolate the main subject and direct the viewer’s attention. For discussion with members.

Your images should clearly show an understanding of how depth of field is influenced by:

• Aperture (f-number)
• Focal Length of the lens
• Distance between the camera and the subject
• Distance between the subject and the background

The aim is to create a shallow depth of field where the main subject is sharp while the foreground and/or background are rendered pleasantly out of focus.

When presenting your image, be prepared to discuss:

• Why you chose your aperture
• How the choice of lens focal length affected the result
• How your camera to subject distance influenced the depth of field
• How the subject’s distance from the background contributed to the final image

The emphasis is not simply using a wide aperture but on demonstrating a thoughtful combination of the above factors.
