Ely Photographic Club Invitational Shield 2025

A&DCC were invited to compete in the inaugural Ely Photographic Club Invitation Shield which was held at Adelaide Hall, Ely College on 12 November. The competition was limited to 8 clubs including Ely and, as 12 clubs had expressed an interest to enter, the selected clubs were chosen based on an algorithm.

This is an “Open” competition with each club submitting 4 PDI and 4 Prints which were judged by Clive Harwood of Cambridge Camera Club. Around 50 people attended including members from each of the participating clubs.

As is usual with inter-club competitions, many of the images were Nature themed 31% (20 images) and Portraits 19% (12 images) but surprisingly, 11% (7 images) of the images were Sports based.

Here is a summary of Clive Harwood’s comments and scores for the images submitted by A&DCC:

PDI

  • Lonely Ride by Ian Gutteridge – Score 17. This is an interesting image with wonderful coloration and tone and the judge really enjoyed the complementary colours with the orange wheels really standing out. The image is symmetrical with good balance and the “envelope” presentation works well.
  • Look Up by Tim Ford – Score 16. Enjoys the coloration with the orange hues complementing the blue. Particularly likes the reflections and the interesting sky.
  • We’re Watching You! by Peter Gibbs – Score 16. This is a slightly comical image and you do feel that you are being watched by the birds. Likes the detail in the image and the wonderful blue sky which ties in with the slight blue tinge in the birds’ heads.
  • Lady in Red by Angela Dunn – Score 18. This is a classic studio shot and the judge really enjoyed the wonderful shape created by the model and the pattern the dress is making. A good choice of background and the skin tones have been handle well. Lots of nice detail including the model’s muscle structure.

  • Taking the Applause by Paul Tapping – Score 16. The lighting is really enjoyable and provides good tonality in the skin. The devise on the performer’s shoulders are a little too white which is distracting. Whilst we can clearly see the face, the eyes are slightly obscured. The composition works well with the hands pointing towards to edges of the frame.
  • A Room for Dreams by Richard Burn – Score 17. The judge really liked the soft feel and the treatment the author has used to help tell the story of being not quite in reality. This is an image that really makes the viewer think.
  • The White Lady by Lee Odell – Score 17. The judge felt that this looked like an image from Narnia. It feels cold with a wonderful soft background working well in contrast to the hard stone wall and the mist in the background works well.
  • Life in the Artic Circle by Richard Burn – Score 17. This is a beautiful scene that has been well captured by the author with good detail throughout. The light coming through the clouds complements the rest of the scene.

The shield was won by Bury St Edmunds Photographic Society and the final scores were:
